Paul Manafort plans to plead guilty to second set of charges

The charges were filed in a criminal information, a document that suggests a deal has been reached.

If Manafort decides to cooperate with Mueller's probe, that would deal a setback to Trump ahead of congressional elections on November 6. Yet, Jackson said the request appeared to relate more to concerns about the political affiliation of Washington residents, rather than a unique amount of pretrial publicity.

It is not clear whether any agreement with prosecutors would require Manafort to co-operate with special counsel Robert Mueller's ongoing investigation into possible co-ordination between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation.

Manafort's conviction in Alexandria, Virginia, last month was at a trial arising from Mueller's investigation.

Prosecutors, who made a point of noting the activity occurred "at least through 2016", used bank records and other documents to show what they say Manafort did to hide evidence of his work for Ukrainian politicians, hide millions in proceeds in offshore accounts, and then spend the money lavishly on clothing, luxury items, homes and cars.

Manafort had denied the allegations and pleaded not guilty.

The punishment that Manafort may receive related to his D.C. case, and any cooperation he may have offered the government, weren't immediately clear.

The charges are related to Manafort's Ukrainian political consulting work.

Trump last month praised his former aide for not entering into an agreement with prosecutors, as the president's former personal lawyer Michael Cohen had.
