Big rigs abandoned as wildfire scorches California freeway

California is taking a financial wallop from unrelenting wildfires that have drained its firefighting budget and prompted almost $1 billion in property claims even before the start of the unsafe fall fire season, officials said Thursday.

Flames from a backfire burned around a fire truck battling the Delta Fire in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest, Calif., on Thursday.

Scattered rural homes and cabins in and around the forest were under evacuation orders, from the community Lakehead north to the Siskiyou County line, Losi said.

A nearby fire in the Redding area burned some 1,100 homes and killed eight people last month.

The Delta Fire and Hirz Fire have both caused mandatory evacuations following overnight growth in both blazes.

The fast-moving fire forced truck drivers to abandon their rigs on the highway.

About 17 big-rigs were abandoned along the interstate and at least four caught fire, Lt. Cmdr.

I-5 remains closed between Fawndale and Mt. Shasta.

The Delta Fire was burning on both sides of Interstate 5, which has made it more hard to control the flames, Underhill said.

To the east of that is the Hirz fire, which is also burning parts of the Shasta National Forest, and is now 80 percent contained after burning more than 18,600 hectares. Officials have issued a warning to residents of potential evacuation, although the fire was about 15 miles away on Friday afternoon.

This is partially because three fires merged into one fire, but also because the fire is extremely active at the moment. Life safety is a top priority for firefighters, and the Shasta County Sheriff's Office is coordinating evacuations for areas affected by the incident.

The Delta Fire erupted Wednesday afternoon and within hours had devoured almost 8 square miles - 5,000 acres - of timber and brush on both sides of Interstate 5 near the OR state line.

The fire, named the Delta Fire, is burning in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest with no containment.

The Delta fire broke out around 25 miles south of where the Carr Fire had raged for six weeks earlier in the season, killing eight people - including six firefighters - and scorching 229,000 acres. It was 8 square miles (21 square kilometers) on Wednesday.

One of the two blazes was fully contained in August and residents have been allowed to return home.
