Lance Stephenson signing with Lakers

Cleveland Cavaliers general manager Koby Altman spoke to both James and Paul on the phone when National Basketball Association free agency officially opened at 12:01 a.m. ET Sunday, sources told ESPN's Dave McMenamin.

The Cavs could have significant salary-cap space in 2019-20, depending on what they do with Love, Tristan Thompson (who will make $18.5 million that season), Jordan Clarkson ($13.4 million), J.R. Smith and Kyle Korver.

James, whose Cavaliers were swept by the Golden State Warriors in the 2018 NBA Finals, opted out of his contract in June, three weeks after the season ended.

But the 33-year-old has interests beyond basketball and the massive Los Angeles market would give him a bigger stage and platform. Here's what's being said. As the NBA's most glamorous franchise, the Lakers live superstar to superstar.

The deal is for four years and $154 million with a player option in the fourth year.

One thing that remains unclear is how much input LeBron James could have in the decision to replace Julius Randle, should he actually leave the Lakers. However, the Cavaliers likely be in the playoffs and have a chance to make some noise, post-LeBron, themselves.

Protesters chanting, 'Set them free!' block bus of migrant kids at border
Lois Frankel, D-Fl., told reporters that after her visit "my concern is not alleviated" over the fate of the separated families. Trump called for Republicans to "stop wasting their time " until more are elected into office this coming November.

With James signing in Los Angeles, that should invite plenty of agonizing debates regarding which player is better: LeBron James or Kobe Bryant.

On Saturday night, it appeared Sixers star Joel Embiid reacted to the possibility of James landing with the Lakers.

Why did James sign with the Lakers?

It's the last long-term max contract that James can sign thanks to the NBA CBA's Over-38 rule (formerly the Over-37 rule). It would be the second time in their careers that the two linked up in free agency.

The Sixers reportedly met with James' team Sunday, which was reportedly a courtesy meeting. "This will always be home". In 2010, he signed with the Miami Heat and won a pair of championships before returning and winning one with the Cavaliers.

James was on a plane that flew into Van Nuys Airport near Los Angeles on Saturday.
