However, perhaps someone pointed out to her that it probably wasn't appropriate attire (or maybe she felt her point had been made) because by the time she landed she'd changed into something a little suitable. However, her good deed was immensely overshadowed when the world got a good look at the two-year-old Zara military-style jacket she was wearing.

The awkwardness of the situation wasn't lost on many online, including, who said it showed indifference. Her choice of accompanying garment, though, has left many to speculate on her true feelings about the policy that has so far left over 2,300 children stranded away from their parents.

When she travels overseas, she's careful to choose outfits that conspicuously reflect the country she is visiting, including a belted jumpsuit in Saudi Arabia, her colorful dresses in France and Italy, and her nod to an Asian influence in Japan, China and South Korea.

According to a pool report, Trump's communications director Stephanie Grisham told a reporter via email: "It's a jacket". The first lady most likely has a full understanding of the spotlight she is under, with coverage of her disappearance from the public eye earlier this year and of her fashion choices.

Melania Trump has come under fire over the freakish outfit she chose to wear to visit immigrant children in detention on the US-Mexico border.

Her spokesman said the jacket had no hidden message, while President Donald Trump tweeted that it referred to "fake news". Trump decided to make the trip a day after the president signed an executive order to stop the separation of families, but it's not her timing people are questioning-it's her fashion choice.

'Melania has learned how dishonest they are, and she truly no longer cares!' he added.

Under Mr Trump's executive order, immigrant families will now be housed together in detention centres while individual family members face charges.
