Is Optimism for Trump-Kim Summit Realistic?

Donald Trump and the North Korean leader Kim Jong-un were expected to land in Singapore on Sunday in advance of a historic summit over the reclusive country's arsenal of nuclear weapons.

"I feel that Kim Jong Un wants to do something great for his people and he has that opportunity".

It will be the first time an incumbent US President has ever met the North Korean leader.

"People call it a historic summit is important to understand that this summit was available to any United States president who wanted to do it and the point is no USA president wanted to do this, and for good reasons", said Christopher Hill, a former lead U.S. nuclear negotiator with North Korea.

Trump and Kim are set to meet in Singapore on Tuesday to try to reach a deal on dismantling the North's nuclear weapons program in exchange for security guarantees.

It's not clear if he had shipped over the massive bulletproof and fireproof limousine that became a social media sensation when Kim was shown being driven across the border between the Koreas during his first summit with South Korean President Moon Jae-in, in April, with a dozen staunch bodyguards encircling the auto.

He added in addition to using bulletproof vehicles, North Korea's security detail would likely deploy layers of protection surrounding the summit venue and try to divert attention from Kim Jong Un's auto whenever he moves.

"If a breakthrough is achieved, if peace comes, there will be a bountiful harvest, primarily of course within the Korean Peninsula but indeed for all the rest of us", he said. The law imposes a financial ban and asset freezes on the government and its component parts, and the Workers Party of Korea, of which Kim is the chairman.

And you have to accept what comes with that". "But we've got to do a good job of just taking away the easy ones". Do that, and more often than not James will say that giving up the ball is the right play.

Kim previously used an IL-76 to transport his armored stretch Mercedes Benz limousine to Dalian, suggesting Sunday's flight to Singapore may be carrying the same vehicle to Singapore.

Kim's chief of staff was spotted in Beijing last week after wrapping up talks with U.S. officials in Singapore which had included security discussions.

According to the USA president, who earlier this week said that he "didn't have to prepare very much" for the meeting other than ready himself to "get things done", much will hinge on Kim's character and openness to genuine negotiation.

At the same time, Trump said there was a "good chance" the meeting would not work out and claimed he would know nearly immediately after the start of talks how the situation would progress.

While Trump's allies have called his unpredictability a negotiating strength that keeps his opponents off balance, some White House aides have expressed concern that the president will not heed talking points in his briefing materials. It was only upon arriving in South Korea that Kim said he realized "how unhappy we were".

Despite occasional eruptions of bloodshed, the war has been dormant for 65 years, so any treaty would be mostly symbolic, said Bong Youngshik, a North Korea expert at Seoul's Yonsei University. He said he was told to stay away from Sentosa Island and the Shangri-La Hotel. "It has to know that its people can eat and that they can have the wealth that the North Korean people so richly deserve", he told Japanese broadcaster NHK.

The brief appearance of Kim's IL-62M personal jet on the flight tracking website, however, came Sunday despite mounting speculation that he might instead use an Air China Boeing 747 to make the flight to Singapore.
