Planned US embassy move may increase tension

Security in Jerusalem has been bolstered for the official opening of the U.S. embassy in the capital.

Israel's military says it will stop any border breach.

Clashes erupted along the fence Monday between Palestinians and Israeli forces as protesters converged on the site for a "day of rage".

"It will not be an easy road", but peace can be achieved if we "dream big", he says.

Monday's opening will be attended by Mr Trump's daughter Ivanka and his son-in-law Jared Kushner, who both serve as White House advisers.

Monday's inauguration ceremony at 4:00 pm (1300 GMT) will include around 800 guests - though not Trump himself - at what until now had been a U.S. consulate building in Jerusalem.

Police and the Israeli military planned major security deployments.

The embassy inauguration was due to occur at 4pm (8pm in Thailand).

For while Israel - and seemingly now Trump, backed by U.S. evangelicals - considers Jerusalem its "eternal, undivided capital", the Palestinians regard the east of the city - occupied by Israel in the 1967 Six Day War - to be the capital of any future Palestinian state.

The demonstrations, led by Gaza's Islamist rulers, Hamas, faced stiff opposition from Israeli forces early Monday. The sides have largely observed a cease-fire since the 2014 war - their third in a decade.

According to Gaza's Health Ministry, 40 Palestinian protesters have been killed so far in the violent clashes with Israeli forces along the coastal enclave's border. Hamas said four members, including three security men, were among the dead Monday.

On the Gaza border, Palestinian protests quickly turned into bloodshed. Hundreds of Palestinians were treated for tear gas inhalation. The army said aircraft targeted a Hamas post in northern Gaza after Israeli troops came under fire.

The timing of the embassy move, and the marches, was deeply symbolic.

The opening ceremony was brought forward to coincide with the state of Israel's 70th anniversary.

Demonstrators are also calling for Palestinian refugees who fled or were expelled during the 1948 war surrounding Israel's creation to be allowed to return to their homes now inside Israel. A great day for the state of Israel.

Clouds of black smoke from burning tires rose into the air. It annexed East Jerusalem shortly later, claiming it as part of its "indivisible capital", in a move which was never recognized internationally.

In December, Trump and the United States chose to "finally recognize the truth: That Jerusalem is the capital of Israel".

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas cut ties with the Trump administration and declared it unfit to mediate peace talks.

Larijani urged Muslim countries to take more serious measures in response to President Donald Trump's "wrong and unwise decision" to move the embassy to Jerusalem.

Friedman is set to preside over the dedication ceremony.
